Election Day Wrap-Up: Working Families Made the Difference

WORKING FAMILIES WIN, ELECTING LINDA GREENSTEIN IN KEY 14th DISTRICT STATE SENATE RACE

News headlines billed this contest for State Senate as a "showdown between Governor Christie and the Unions" and the Governor called it the most important race in NJ. Greenstein had the support of every Union in her district, including CWA Local 1036. Her opponent had no union support, but instead had the Governor and Lt. Governor attending town halls, fundraisers, and other events campaigning for him. Greenstein has a 100% labor voting record and has fought against bad legislation that would cut our bargained benefits, stood with us on picket lines, and really "gets" the labor movement and its working families.

Every Saturday in October, more and more regular working people volunteered for Linda Greenstein to help educate our neighbors and fellow union members about how important this race was to protecting our benefits, our pension, and our on-the-job life. Every Saturday and on Election Day, CWA 1036 was a top performer as we had both seasoned stewards and new members alike work our get-out-the-vote program.
Emma Coefer (DHSS Steward), Senator Linda Greenstein, Sharon Robinson (DHSS Steward), Ralph White (DHSS Steward), Howard Roun (VP Local Govt), John Seiler (Staff Rep), Chris Shelton (CWA District 1 VP), Larry Kane (VP, DHSS and Ag), Adam Liebtag (President), Pete Burkhalter (Treasurer)
On Election Day, there were 162 CWA 1036 volunteers pounding the pavement to get out our vote. It worked. Our Local members helped win this key State Senate seat. Congratulations to Senator-Elect Greenstein and a deep and sincere thank you to all the 1036 members who worked so hard to communicate the importance of this effort.

Fortunately for us, this was a rare election where we had an excellent, smart, and sincere candidate who genuinely cares about working families and the labor movement. The voters made the right choice.

US CONGRESS and US SENATE
Although the majority shifted from Democrat to Republican in the US Congress, here in NJ most incumbents won with support from labor. Key victories where CWA members helped make the difference include re-electing Rush Holt (12th District) and Frank Pallone (6th District) who both faced tough challenges.

Bob Master (CWA District 1 Political Director), Laurel Brennan (NJ AFL-CIO Sec-Treasurer), Senator Linda Greenstein, Chris Shelton (CWA District 1 VP), Adam Liebtag (1036 President), Patrick Kavanagh (1032 President)
BALLOT QUESTION #1 - Preserving Dedicated Employee Benefit Funds
The ballot question protecting employee benefit funds against state raids was passed overwhelmingly by voters. The NJ Constitution is now amended to ensure that unemployment benefits, temporary disability benefits, and other funds are not redirected by the State to any other purpose.
LOCAL 1036 MEMBER, JASON ALLEN, WINS IN PEMBERTON TWP
Jason Allen, CWA 1036 member, won his first bid for Pemberton Township Council, backed by support from both public and private sector union members in Burlington County. Local 1036 helped canvass for Jason in October and on Election Day to make sure we support one of our own running for office. Congratulations to Jason!
